Artist's Description

When I saw the name Martinus Rorbye in a gallery, I first thought it might be a fellow Norwegian, but then it turned out to be a painter from Denmark. It didn't make me like the painting any less, of course. I often find myself rather drawn to images from the Scandinavian Romanticism, and this one is no exception.

Like so many of his fellow Romantics, Martinus travelled to Italy where he got inspired by the Roman countryside, and where in 1835 he painted this lovely scene of two shepherd boys sitting down for a rest around a small campfire, their dog attentively watching over the flock, and one of the boys readying what looks like a chalumeau (a forerunner of today's clarinet) for playing.

About Hakon Soreide

Hakon Soreide

Born in Norway in 1974, and discovering I knew how to paint in 1999, my work spans a wide variety of styles and media, all the way from traditional oils, pencil drawings and encaustics to digital paintings, 3D renderings and computer generated imagery, with styles ranging from the completely abstract to the sensually figurative.
